Why me? is leaving Twitter/X
Why me? has made the decision to stop posting on Twitter in 2025. We have made this decision for a few reasons, but primarily because it no longer aligns with our values.
In our research prior to coming to this decision, we came across some statistics and key events that were impossible to ignore:
“Within 12 hours of Musk taking over the platform in October, the use of the n-word had increased nearly 500% from the previous average.” Charities Against Hate
“Anti-Black tweets jumped more than 200%” since Musk’s takeover and antisemitic posts “increased by more than 61% in the two weeks after Musk completed his takeover.” PC Magazine
“Per research from the Center for Countering Digital Hate, X has failed to moderate hate speech on its platform that promotes antisemitic conspiracies, praises Hitler and dehumanizes Muslims and Palestinians.” Tech Crunch
Last year, Twitter “quietly removed language in its hateful conduct policy that explicitly protected transgender people from online harassment.” NBC
“For charities, it’s problematic because many have ethical and charitable purposes that are not aligned with the entrepreneur’s views.” Charity Digital
With these facts in mind, X’s role in spreading misinformation and failure to regulate hateful content makes it clear that this platform does not align with the values of our charity. We therefore wish to distance ourselves from what is turning into an echo chamber of prejudice.
By remaining on Twitter, rather than exploring other options such as Bluesky, CounterSocial and Threads, we continue to support X’s monopoly and promote the lack of regulation on the platform.
On top of the ethical considerations, Twitter is also losing users, in particular those in the charity and public sectors. Some of the organisations who have announced that they are leaving Twitter include The Guardian, North Wales Police and ACEVO.
What now?
Why me? will stop posting on Twitter/X in the new year and will focus our attention on other social media platforms instead. Please make sure you follow us on the following platforms:
LinkedIn: Why me? UK
Instagram: @whymeuk
Facebook: @WhymeUK
Bluesky: @whymeuk.bsky.social
Threads: @whymeuk
Mastodon: @whymeUK
Whilst it is still unclear which platform will emerge as Twitter’s most prominent competitor, we want to ensure that we are present on the key emerging platforms. For now, we have set up accounts on Threads, Mastodon and Bluesky and look forward to seeing how these platforms develop.
Threads, which is Meta’s latest social media platform and is integrated with Instagram, has reportedly now surpassed 275 million monthly active users. Bluesky is also growing by around 1 million users a day and looks and functions very similarly to Twitter prior to Musk’s takeover.
Whilst we are no longer going to be posting on X, we are not deleting our account altogether. The reason we want to still have a profile is so that people looking for support, particularly those affected by crime who are X users, can still find us. We will use our profile to direct people towards our other platforms and our website.
Should you do the same?
Whilst Why me? have made a decision that works for us, we recognise that it is not simple. Many organisations want to stay visible to their service users who may still be using the platform. Others want to hold a space on Twitter to prevent it becoming more and more radical. We ask that you consider all of these factors and come to your own decision, whatever that may be!
