Why me? joins calls for a renewed national hate crime action plan
This is a blog by our CEO, Sara Dowling
Too many communities continue to live with the fear and trauma of hate crime — and the problem is getting worse.
Since the last Hate Crime Action Plan expired in 2020, recorded hate crimes have risen by 31%, with over 137,000 offences in the year ending March 2025. Yet there is still no national plan in place to coordinate prevention, victim support, and accountability.
That’s why we’ve joined organisations, academics, and experts across the UK in signing an open letter to the Home Secretary, the Secretary of State for Housing, Communities and Local Government, and the Secretary of State for Justice, calling for a renewed Hate Crime Action Plan for England and Wales.
The evidence and solutions are already clear – from ensuring consistent victim support and strengthening police expertise, to tackling online hate and establishing an independent Hate Crime Commissioner.
We’re calling on the Government to act now, work with experts and communities, and commit to building safer, more cohesive communities for all.
