Why me? at the Chris Donovan AwardsLast week, our Director, Lucy Jaffé, received her award for ‘Services to Restorative Justice’, from the Chris Donovan Trust. It was an honour to attend the awards ceremony which showcased a range of committed and passionate figures in the Restorative Justice and wider criminal justice field.

The Why me? team were represented by our Strategic Programmes Manager, Kate Aldous; Communications and Events Coordinator, Keeva Baxter; Trustee, Julia Dawson; and our Ambassador, Rob. The team were delighted to support Lucy, celebrating all she has achieved in the restorative sector over the course of her 12 years at Why me?.

Jim Simon of the Restorative Justice Council was also recognised through the ‘Services to Restorative Justice’ award. It is encouraging to see the work of key players in the restorative sector being recognised and celebrated. The awards are particularly special as Ray and Vi have such a personal connection with Restorative Justice, having taken part in the process after their son Chris Donovan was killed. The event included a touching tribute to Chris from Ray and Vi who, after participating in a restorative process, founded the Chris Donovan Trust to continue his legacy.

Lucy Jaffe and Elliot Colburn MPThe awards ceremony was attended by Elliot Colburn, MP for Carshalton and Wallington and chair of the All Party Parliamentary Group for Restorative Justice. It was wonderful to have the support of Elliot who is an advocate for Restorative Justice in the House of Commons and will be meeting with the Victims and Sentencing Minister, the Rt Hon. Edward Argar to discuss Restorative Justice soon. The Mayor of Sutton also attended the ceremony, celebrating the Chris Donovan Trust and his constituents Ray and Vi.

We heard the stories of people who had experienced loss through crime and the Why me? team learned about the other award winners, including individuals and organisations tackling street violence, knife crime with a focus on grassroots activism and passionate individuals.

We want to extend a big thank you to Ray and Vi and congratulations to Lucy for her well-deserved award.
