Feed into the Government’s Independent Review of Prisons

At the beginning of the month, the Government announced that they are conducting an independent review into the prison system in England and Wales.

They explained that the rationale behind this decision was the “ongoing and future challenges that are not widely understood, shaped by pressures across capacity, safety and decency, security and rehabilitation, as well as the age, condition and configuration of the prison estate.”

As part of this review, on the 16th of July, they announced a call for evidence where they aim to gather views on the future of the prison system.

You can feed into the review by answering the consultation questions on the following themes:

Theme 1: Key outcomes, risks and opportunities

Theme 2: The prison estate and its capacity

Theme 3: Security

Theme 4: Prison leadership and workforce

Theme 5: Safety and decency

Theme 6: Rehabilitation and reducing reoffending

Theme 7: Women’s prisons

Theme 8: Different cohorts

Theme 9: Technology and digital tools

Theme 10: Best practice in England, Wales, other UK justice systems and overseas

We urge you to fill in the consultation. Why me? will be submitting our own response, urging the Government to integrate restorative approaches and ensure that the offer of Restorative Justice is made to people in prisons. If you are not filling in the consultation but would still like to have your voice heard then please let us know the key points that you would like to have included via our info@why-me.org email.
